Ken Burns’ Prohibition series

51IVr2NXJyL._SY300_I’ve been watching Ken Burns’s Prohibition series (2012) for the second time and enjoying it even more than I did the first. If you haven’t seen it, don’t delay. It opens with a quotation from Mark Twain that I think you’ll enjoy.

“Nothing so needs reforming than other people’s habits.”

This, of course, pertains to Prohibition, but as usual, Twain is timeless.

I gave talks about Prohibition for book clubs twice last week and we discussed what’s going on with legalized marijuana in Colorado and Washington and how that relates to Prohibition. It’s eerie how close the issues are. It will be interesting to watch what happens in these states to see if events follow the same pattern as the re-legalization of alcohol in 1933.

  1. Burns’ documentary and Okrent’s book are the best I’ve found so far on Prohibition.

    • I couldn’t agree more. They have helped me immensely.

What do you think?
